​WhatsApp—the most used messaging app in Singapore — about the COVID-19 outbreak

Since late January, after Singapore recorded its first few COVID-19 cases, a research team at NTU’s WKWSCI has been keeping track of messages being forwarded on WhatsApp—the most used messaging app in Singapore — about the COVID-19 outbreak. There are a few ways to spot potential misinformation when you receive forwarded messages, say Assoc Prof Edson C Tandoc Jr of NTU’s WKWSCI and Mak Weng Wai, a final-year student at NTU’s SoH, majoring in History, in a commentary. The work is part of Assoc Prof Tandoc’s Information Integrity Initiative project that focuses on studying information quality during a period of misinformation.
