At WKWSCI’s Changemakers session on 26 February 2026, industry leader Abel Ang delivered a thought-provoking talk centred on a powerful idea: your degree alone is not your differentiator — your narrative is.

Changemakers is a high-level, high-impact presentation series designed to inspire WKWSCI students and guests by showcasing diverse career pathways and accomplished industry leaders. The series seeks to inspire, refuel and recharge aspirations, empowering participants to envision themselves confidently in their future careers.

Drawing from his cross-industry journey, Abel encouraged attendees to think beyond credentials and focus instead on building an intentional, coherent career story.

A key highlight of the session was his discussion on what to look out for when evaluating job opportunities. Rather than chasing prestige alone, participants were urged to consider:

  • The quality of leadership and mentorship

  • Opportunities for meaningful responsibility

  • The development of transferable, durable skills

  • The environment and culture they would be entering

He reinforced that careers are rarely linear. Growth comes from deliberate practice, bold decisions and embracing “work adventures” that stretch one’s capabilities.

Among his memorable insights:

  • Your degree won’t save you: continuous skill-building and adaptability are essential.

  • All it takes is practice: strong interviews and communication skills are developed, not innate.

  • Become an “AI centaur”: cultivate fluency with AI tools to dramatically enhance productivity and effectiveness.

His candid reflections on navigating the job market, pivoting when necessary, and crafting a compelling narrative resonated strongly across the audience. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where participants sought advice on identifying strong mentorship, meaningful growth opportunities, and working environments that support their long-term development.

Through conversations like these, Changemakers continues to bridge academic learning with real-world insight, empowering our community to shape their own stories with clarity, courage and confidence.

If you know an industry leader whose journey could inspire our community, we warmly invite you to nominate a speaker for a future Changemakers session.
