“I wanted to look beyond advertising and become a more purposeful communicator.”
After four years in advertising, I knew the industry from the inside, but I wanted to see the bigger picture. I pursued the Master of Media and Communication (MMC) to understand how communication is evolving across markets and where different areas of the industry intersect. The programme gave me that broader perspective while grounding what I learnt in practical application.
The Crisis Communication module was one of the experiences that stayed with me most. In the final week, we were immersed in a live crisis simulation, responding to developments in real time as a team. With the clock running, we had to think quickly, adapt and make decisions under pressure. It brought the realities of crisis communication to life in a way a lecture alone could not.
The Data Storytelling module introduced me to another way of thinking about communication. I learnt how to take data beyond collection and organisation and shape it into something that communicates clearly and convincingly. That hands-on approach, together with professors who were approachable and generous with their time, made the learning immediately relevant.
My classmates also brought perspectives from different industries and markets, while industry engagements exposed me to areas beyond advertising, from production and public relations to brand communication. Some of my strongest memories were outside the classroom too: conversations between classes, meals with friends and exploring Singapore together. The people and the city became as much a part of the experience as the programme itself.
Being nominated for the Mediacorp Gold Medal was a meaningful way to conclude my MMC journey. I entered the programme wanting to become a more purposeful communicator and left with a broader understanding of not only how to reach and engage audiences, but also the thinking and purpose behind effective communication.
