“IS equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to make a career transition and lead my library’s digital transformation.”
I pursued the Master of Science in Information Studies (IS) as I prepared to transition into librarianship at my alma mater, Trinity Theological College (TTC). With the role requiring a professional librarian qualification, the programme offered the knowledge and training I needed to move into a new field.
Coming into information management from a very different professional background, I had limited exposure to many areas of technology. Through IS, I developed an understanding of concepts such as APIs, UI/UX, large language models and digital platforms, and how they can be applied in an information environment.
Some of my most valuable learning also came from exploring modules beyond the core IS curriculum. Leadership and Organisational Development exposed me to different perspectives and ways of thinking, while the interactive learning environment allowed me to learn from classmates with diverse professional backgrounds. It reinforced the value of looking beyond my immediate discipline and being open to different areas of knowledge.
Since completing the programme, I have taken on the role of College Librarian at TTC, where I work with vendors of our library management system and e-platforms as part of the library’s continuing digitalisation efforts. IS has given me a stronger understanding of the technologies shaping modern information services and the confidence to engage with them in my work. It has helped me approach our library’s digital transformation with a broader perspective and make more informed decisions about how we move forward.
