“Studying in Singapore broadened my perspective on communication, branding and audiences beyond the US.”
Before pursuing the Master of Media and Communication (MMC), I had spent my entire life in the United States and had never lived abroad. I was ready for a change and wanted to experience a completely new environment. MMC offered both the academic rigour I was looking for and the opportunity to experience life and learning in Singapore.
Some of my favourite experiences took learning beyond the classroom. The Branded Content Marketing module gave me new perspectives on how brands communicate with audiences, while a visit to Google offered a closer look at how media, technology and branding intersect in practice. Hearing directly from industry professionals made what we were learning feel current and relevant.
Coming from the United States, I also valued being exposed to industries and professional environments in Singapore and Asia for the first time. In class, I was encouraged to articulate my ideas and contribute my own perspective while learning from classmates with different professional and cultural backgrounds. This helped me become more confident in expressing my views and more open to perspectives different from my own.
Moving across the world on my own was also a significant personal step. Living in Singapore helped me become more independent and adaptable, while the programme broadened how I think about communication, branding, audiences and relationship-building. These perspectives continue to be relevant in my work today.
Being nominated for the Mediacorp Gold Medal was a meaningful recognition of my MMC journey and an opportunity to reflect on how much I had grown, both academically and personally, since I first arrived in Singapore.
