SoH Linguist to Take the TEDxSingapore Stage

The School of Humanities is proud to announce that Associate Professor Tan Ying Ying has been invited to speak at TEDxSingapore 2026 — the first time a SoH faculty member has been selected for this iconic main stage event.
Associate Professor Tan is a linguist whose work explores how language shapes and is shaped by the communities that use it. As Head of the Linguistics and Multilingual Studies division at NTU SoH, she examines language use and perception in bilingual and multilingual societies, with a focus on sociophonetics and sociolinguistics. She is also the first Singaporean to receive the prestigious Fung Global Fellowship from Princeton University.
Her research spans the phonetic and prosodic features of Singapore English, the legitimacy of local language varieties, and the policies that govern language planning and multilingualism in Singapore and beyond.
This year's TEDxSingapore theme, Landing Points, asks: Where we set foot. Where we belong. It's a fitting stage for Associate Professor Tan, whose work interrogates how language, education and media policies shape identity, belonging and the multilingual Singaporean.
