Congratulations to our Chinese programme alumnus Khoo Yong Kang for being awarded the 28th Distinguished Chinese Language Teachers Award (第28届全国杰出华文教师奖). This award recognises excellence in the teaching of the Chinese language and honours teachers for their innovation and dedication in teaching. Notably, Khoo Yong Kang, 33, is the youngest among the seven recipients of this year’s award. Khoo Yong Kang currently teaches the Chinese Language at Fuhua Secondary School and leads its Student Leadership Development Programme.

In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao published on 7 September 2025, Khoo Yong Kang highlights how Chinese language classes can extend beyond the learning of new vocabulary in textbooks and classroom communication. Besides mastering the basics of Chinese language proficiency, Khoo Yong Kang hopes that his students will apply the values imparted through Chinese language classes in their future lives to become better individuals. Using a student-centred teaching approach, Khoo Yong Kang often uses relatable tools such as song lyrics, dramas, and movies to motivate students to learn about the Chinese lanuguage through popular culture.

The 2025 National Distinguished Chinese Teacher Award Ceremony was held on Saturday, 6 September, at an appreciation banquet for teachers (千人谢师宴)hosted by the New Media Chinese Media Group. The guest of honour, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, presented the awards to the winning teachers of this year.
