Singapore in the late 70s was certainly different from what it is today and in some ways from Germany, but not in all. The most difficult for an immigrant from Europe was the lack of a common language for everyone, English was not spoken widely in those days. I will talk about the changes I have observed in Singapore regarding families, education, professional opportunities, and daily life over the years and answer any questions you may have. Perhaps you can help me to find an answer to the question that I frequently ask myself: Am I German or Singaporean?

Bio:

Renate Goh, Goethe-Institut Singapore, Head of Language Department was born in 1958 in Germany, married a Singaporean, and arrived in Singapore in 1977 without knowing much about life in Singapore.  She loves reading, especially German and English classics, and studying European history. After taking care of her two children for a few years, she started teaching German as a Foreign Language at the Goethe-Institut Singapore as a trainee part-time teacher in 1988 and from 1992 as a full-time teacher. A new passion was born: teaching!

Since 2005, she has participated and participates in local and regional teacher training programs as a trainer and teacher educator for the Goethe-Institut. At that time, she was also involved in the development of the first regional online learning concepts. In 2018, she took over as Head of Language Department at the Goethe-Institut Singapore. And she still misses teaching in the classroom!
