PSYCHOSOCIAL ASPECTS OF SPORT AND EXERCISE [course outline]

This is an introductory course on exercise and sport psychology. The focus of this course is on the social and psychological aspects of sport and exercise. Topics covered include personality, motivation, stress and coping, aggression, moral development, team building and cohesion, competition, and leadership. Emphasis will be on the role of sport psychology in influencing participants’ cognition, emotion, and behaviour in physical activity and sport settings.

FOUNDATIONS OF MOTOR BEHAVIOUR [course outline]

This introductory course introduces key concepts of motor control and learning, with a strong emphasis on experiential learning via practical experience of skills learning. The course comprises of components such as the degrees of freedom problem, theoretical paradigms, process of learning, and instructional strategies related to motor skills learning.

This course introduces basic mechanical concepts, laboratory equipment and software to evaluate human movements: Linear and angular kinematics, Linear and angular kinetics, Equilibrium, and Fluid mechanics.

SPORT COACHING: FOUNDATIONS OF COACHING [course outline]

This course examines and applies practical sport coach pedagogy (learning theories and instructional models) to the sport environment. Issues related to effective coaching of young athletes will be addressed. In addition, pedagogical knowledge and application of the principles of motor skills’ learning will be covered in this course.

This course will introduce students to theories in the area of sport marketing and sponsorship. Students will learn various marketing theories and concepts which will allow them to appreciate the roles that marketing play in the industry: Market Segmentation and Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Mix, and Sponsorship.

SEMINARS ON CURRENT ISSUES IN SPORT [course outline]

The course will cover topical sport science themes relevant to athletic performance, including doping and drug use and the role of sleep in sport performance. In relation to local athletes the effects of Ramadan on sport performance will be evaluated. From the sport management perspective, emerging topics related to sport marketing in social media and video games and the role and effectiveness of sport sponsorship will be evaluated. The organisation of major sporting events will also be discussed which is relevant to the recent major sport events (Formula 1, SEA Games) held in Singapore.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND LEISURE FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS [course outline]

This is an experiential course designed to introduce students to the world of adapted physical activity, leisure and sport for individuals with special needs. Students will gain an overview of the various recreational and sporting activities available in Singapore, and be introduced to the different disability conditions and the sports played by different disability groups. Principles, guidelines and strategies for activity instruction will be gleaned through hands-on participation, class discussions and personal reflections.

This introductory research course covers the basic contents necessary for students to undertake undergraduate research. Topics covered include basic appreciation of the research process, various strategies for qualitative and quantitative research, and the communication of research.

The focus of this course is on psychology of exercise and sport. The course is designed to provide students with an understanding of how psychological variables influence participation in physical activity. The focus is on the key motivational perspectives of exercise and sport. Advance topics such as children in sport, burnout, and psychology of injury will also be covered.

SPORT PSYCHOLOGY IN THEORY PRACTICE AND RESEARCH [course outline]

The focus of this course is on theory, research and practices in sport and exercise psychology. The students will be introduced to the role of applied sport psychologist, the development and evaluation of basic mental skill training, and theories underpinning each mental skill. This course will be both theoretical and practical based on research evidence. In addition, the development and evaluation of basic psychological skills training programmes will be introduced.

SPORT COACHING : THEORY TO PRACTICE [course outline]

This course builds on the work undertaken in the foundation of sport coaching and critically examines the understanding and application of sport pedagogy (learning theories and instructional models) to the sport environment. Students will be given opportunities to observe and sample some coaching sessions, mentored by experienced instructors/coaches. In addition, best practice from successful sporting countries will also be explored to give learners an international perspective in sport coaching.

MOTOR CONTROL AND LEARNING THEORY TO PRACTICE [course outline]

This course focuses on the central questions of why, when, and how movements becomes coordinated over time by way of reflecting on current theories and research. In particular, the dynamical systems approach is adopted as the main theoretical paradigm. Topics related to complex systems, ecological psychology, degrees of freedom problem, perceptual-motor landscape, and specific practical strategies related to acquisition of skills will be covered.

This course introduces fundamental topics related to sport technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. Contents related to sport engineering, making and coding culture, sport materials and wearable technologies, and data analytics are covered to provide students with broad-based knowledge regarding sport technology and innovation. Students will also be guided to program and prototype a sport or movement related electronics gadgets. The last component of this course concerns the development of business plans.

LEGAL ASPECTS IN SPORT [course outline]

The purpose of this course is to give the students in sport management department a conceptual foundation for understanding the law and its relationship to sport, recreation, and physical activities. The course explores the kinds of legal problems faced in the day-to-day operations of an athletic, sport program, physical education, and recreational activities into common sense perspective that is easily understood and remembered. It is not intended to teach all there is known about the law but instead to serve as an introduction to areas of law that most often have an impact on administrators, practitioners, and sport industry.

More than 600 muscles are used by humans to work, exercise, play and accomplish daily tasks. The skeletal muscle is our body’s most abundant tissue making about 22-26% of a female’s body mass and about 40-44% of a male’s body mass. Adequate muscle strength is  important  at  every  stage  of  our  life  to  move  with  ease,  improve  bone  health,  efficient  glucose  tolerance  and  better  metabolism,  better  posture,  avoid  injuries,  enhance  self-esteem and have an improved quality of life This module is structured to provide a concept and practice-based knowledge on muscular fitness and conditioning.

INTRODUCTION TO PILATES MATWORK AND HATHA YOGA [course outline]

The aim of this course introduces students to the fundamentals of pilates matwork and hatha yoga. It will provide a strong foundation for them to continue their practice in future. Course will progress to introduce students to intermediate movements and poses with modifications. With the knowledge and proper practice of pilates and yoga, they will be able to improve core strength, flexibility, mobility of the joints and techniques of breathing that can help them to feel more relaxed.

The course aims to provide students with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, understanding and experience necessary to develop an appreciation of, and play, the sport of badminton. Students will be taught the essential skills necessary to play the sport.

This course aims to impart the knowledge and competencies essential to having an informed understanding and appreciation of tennis. Students will be introduced to the basic skills necessary to play the game.

SQUASH [course outline]

This course is designed to impart basic squash skills and knowledge of the game of squash to players at an introductory stage leading into intermediate levels. The emphasis of the course is on providing ample opportunities to play the game at a recreational as well as a competitive level. Also under consideration are the respective roles of player, referee and coach in creating a meaningful experience.

This course is designed to provide students with the basic skills and knowledge to play and enjoy recreational basketball. Students will be taught on basic fundamental skills, rule/terminology, officiating, team offense/defense, and situational strategies.

This course is an activity class for providing NTU undergraduate students with the basic skills and knowledge required to play volleyball. Emphasis is on basic fundamental skills, rules/terminologies, officiating, team offense/defense drills, and game situational strategies. Particularly, students will learn to execute basics such as passing, setting, serving, and hitting, referee games, become familiar with game terms, and practice fairplay, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

The course is designed to impart basic netball skills and knowledge. Participants will be given the opportunity to develop the basic footwork and ball skills, goal shooting skills, and study the principles of attacking/defending, as well as the application of these skills and game concepts/tactics in game play.

This course aims to impart the knowledge and competencies essential to having an informed understanding and appreciation of table tennis. Students will be introduced to the basic skills necessary to play the game.

This course aims to develop basic skills in soccer, and to provide an understanding and appreciation of the sport through an experiential process. Students will be introduced to the historical development and current trends in soccer, the technical aspects of soccer, strategies and tactics employed in the sport, and competition formats.

Hockey as a game may seem "strange and unfamiliar" but actually it has many similarities to other sports. This course will enable students to learn the game of hockey in a fun manner. It pays particular attention to safety and will enable participants to enjoy the skills in a simple yet enjoyable manner. By the end of the course participants will be more aware of field hockey as a sport which can be enjoyed by all ages and all levels of ability.

Floorball is a young and fast growing game in Singapore and the world. This course will enable students to learn the game of Floorball in a fun and safe environment through a game-centred approach.

RUGBY [course outline]

This course aims to develop knowledge, understanding and playing competency in the various forms of rugby football namely, tag rugby, touch rugby and contact rugby. The basic techniques, tactics and strategies will be learnt and applied in practice and match situations and analysed from theoretical, practical and biomechanical perspectives.

TCHOUKBALL [course outline]

This course is an activity class for providing NTU undergraduate students with the basic skills and knowledge required to play tchoukball. Emphasis is on the unique tchoukball charter, philosophy of non-interception and non-contact, basic fundamental skills, tchoukball rules/terminologies, team offense/defense drills, game situational tactics and officiating. Students will learn to execute basics such as passing, shooting, defending, and transition, court official and its duties, officiate games, become familiar with game terms and referee hand signals, and practice sportsmanship, fairplay and teamwork. Students will also acquire skills in leading a peer coaching session and work as a team to organize and officiate a mini competition.

INTRODUCTION TO HIP HOP AND ITS DANCES [course outline]

How many times have you wondered - what exactly is Hip-Hop? Over this course, learners will be exposed to how the Hip-Hop culture we know of today, born in the mid-1970s in an impoverished section of New York City, found its way to the mass media and mainstream population and evolved into a multi-million dollar industry. Emphasis will be placed on learning about roots of Hip-Hop, particularly its dances. Participants will learn to dance to the rhythm of music and be introduced to some common moves popularized by prominent dance pioneers.
