Our Specialisations

Banking and Finance

With Singapore being a financial hub in the region, there is an increasing demand for talent in banks and finance-related firms. The Banking and Finance (B&F) specialisation in NBS offers a curriculum that is built on continuous review and collaboration with government regulators and premier employers in the financial industry. The curriculum has been structured to train and prepare students to meet the needs of the rapidly changing financial environment and careers in Wealth Management, Asset Management, Corporate Finance, Investment Banking and Financial Innovation and Analytics (FinTech).

Digital literacy courses are a core component of the B&F curriculum, as students learn about emerging technologies as well as how to produce useful and actionable information that can make a positive impact on the company's operations and profitability. B&F students are also required to take up communication, cultural intelligence and career foundation courses so that they have a combination of skills for the up-and-coming roles.

NBS is among a select group of top business schools to be recognised as a CFA Program Partner Institution by CFA Institute. Recognition as a CFA Program Partner signals to the industry and top employers that the NBS B&F curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is well-suited to preparing students to sit for the CFA examinations.

NBS is also an academic partner with Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association® (CAIA Association), which works to promote education and professionalism in the alternative investment industry. This academic partnership demonstrates that the NBS curriculum covers a substantial portion of topics in the CAIA curriculum.

Actuarial Science

NBS is the only business school in Singapore to offer a Bachelor of Business (Actuarial Science). This specialisation provides solid and in-depth training for students who aspire to pursue a well-respected profession, which has been ranked among the top 10 by Jobs Rated Report in the US.

Actuarial Science is popular among students who possess strong analytical and numerical abilities, and have a keen interest in insurance, finance and risk management. Graduates are highly sought after and employed as actuaries, actuarial analysts before moving on to managerial positions.

The course is accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), UK, and it is the only programme in Singapore to be accredited by IFoA. On successful completion of this specialisation, students can qualify for up to six exemptions for the Institute’s Core Subjects examinations, which go towards their professional requirement to qualify as an actuary.

International Trading Programme

Singapore is the largest physical commodities trading hub in Asia and home to the decision-making and risk management functions for global commodity traders. In 2013, wholesale trade accounted for 1 in 10 jobs in Singapore. It is one of the largest contributors to Singapore’s economic value-add (VA) among all services sectors, constituting 16% of Singapore’s total VA and contributing more than 350,000 jobs. It has been a high growth sector over the past decade, achieving 12% annual VA growth between 2002 and 2012.

The bustling ecosystem of offshore traders and supporting industries creates highly-skilled jobs for Singaporeans and include some 14,100 professionals. To further strengthen Singapore’s status as a leading global trading hub, there is a need to develop a robust talent pool as part of the trade ecosystem. It is estimated that Singapore will need to grow the specialised talent pool for the trading sector by approximately 500 per year to ensure a healthy pipeline of talent to fuel and sustain the continued growth of the sector.

With total trade valued almost three times of Singapore’s GDP, the commodity trading sector is vital to Singapore’s future economic growth and an attractive career pathway for NTU graduates. The global commodity trading corporations present opportunities for graduates with technical competencies in the trading industry.

To develop a pipeline of talent for the trading sector, NBS, in partnership with Enterprise Singapore and the trading industry, has launched a new International Trading Programme (ITP). Exclusively offered through the following undergraduate programmes as an additional specialisation or track option, the ITP will provide the key foundation and gateway to attractive careers in the lucrative commodity trading sector and value chain.

Risk Analytics (formerly Risk Management and Insurance)

Today’s society faces major challenges such as global warming, ageing, catastrophic risks and emerging threats such as cyber-attacks. They have been increasing in magnitude and complexity. To properly execute their job functions, risk managers and insurers need to develop innovative solutions and tools. They need to enhance corporate and personal risk management.

Recognising the need to develop a pipeline of talent for the Risk Management and Insurance sector in the Asia-Pacific region, NBS launched the Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) Programme in 2015, with support from the Monetary Authority of Singapore and top companies in the insurance industry. Students will develop a strong foundation that will enable them to become astute professionals solving insurance and financial risk management issues.

Several insurance courses are designed to cover topics that corresponds to the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) units. Successful completion of those courses prepares students to take corresponding CII examinations.
