Singapore Climate Rally held next month; academics: Speakers’ Corner still relevant in internet era

15 youths will hold a climate rally at the Speakers’ Corner next month. Academics said that while more people express their views through channels such as the internet, the Speakers’ Corner still has its role, such as a gathering platform for a collective voice. Prof Ang Peng Hwa from NTU's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information said when the Speakers’ Corner first opened, the internet was still in the nascent stage. Now the number of people that social media can reach out to is larger than the capacity of Hong Lim Park. He also added that the Speakers’ Corner still has a role, for example, some activities need the presence of people, where it is a form of emotional catharsis when people do not mind the trouble to gather at one place.
