Assistant Professor Luke Lu has authored a commentary for CNA examining the evolving role of Chinese dialects in Singapore's multilingual landscape, using the recent discussion surrounding the Teochew-language film Dear You as a starting point. Drawing on his expertise in sociolinguistics and language policy, he argues that Singapore's successful bilingual education system has created the conditions to rethink longstanding restrictions on dialects in public media.
Citing linguistic research, he explains that there is no evidence that exposure to Chinese dialects impedes the learning of Mandarin and suggests that greater space for dialect films and media can support the preservation of Singapore's linguistic and cultural heritage while complementing, rather than competing with, existing language policies.
