Assoc Prof Tan Ying Ying Discusses Dialect Films and Concerns Over Heritage and Language Loss in Singapore
In response to a decision by IMDA allowing more screenings of viral Chinese film Dear You in Singapore, Associate Professor Tan Ying Ying, Director of the MA in Linguistics and Head of Linguistics and Multilingual Studies, said that the decision to allow more screenings of a fialect film was a positive sign, but did not necessarily point to a wider policy shift. She said that public interest in the film reflected a wider concern over dialects, heritage and language loss, rather than a threat to Mandarin.
