Prof Yan Zhou has received the inaugural Global Bioeconomy Alliance (GBA) Award
#NTUsg Prof Yan Zhou has received the inaugural Global Bioeconomy Alliance (GBA) Award for Impact and Leadership in Bioeconomy, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The award represents international recognition for turning waste into valuable product.
The award was presented at the GBA Conference on Key Technologies in the #Bioeconomy (KTB 2025), held from 29 September to 3 October 2025 in Copenhagen, Denmark. It recognises outstanding #leadership and #innovation that advance the global bioeconomy. Prof Zhou, who is the Associate Chair (Faculty) at the NTU School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), Singapore, was honoured for her groundbreaking research in the field of sustainable sludge treatment, which transforms waste into renewable resources through green processes.
Her recent #innovation is a solar-powered, eco-friendly method that converts #wastewater sludge into green #hydrogen and single-cell protein for animal feed. This new process significantly reduces emissions and energy use while producing valuable by-products for the #circulareconomy.
