Launch of RGE-NTU Sustainable Textile Research Centre (RGE-NTU SusTex) - Prof Hu Xiao & Assoc Prof Dalton Tay

We are proud to share that Prof Hu Xiao has been featured in the news and on various media platforms regarding the launch of the new textile recycling research centre – RGE-NTU Sustainable Textile Research Centre (RGE-NTU SusTex).

Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), a global resource-based manufacturing group, and NTU have launched RGE-NTU SusTex to accelerate innovation in textile recycling and translate research outcomes into practical solutions that can be deployed in urban settings like Singapore.

The S$6M joint research centre is part of NTU’s ambition and efforts to mitigate our environment under its NTU2025 Strategic Plan, and builds on RGE’s sustainability commitment to exploring how waste can also be used to generate new materials.

RGE-NTU SusTex will draw upon the expertise of NTU scientists from MSE and SCBE to drive its research in the following focus areas:
  • Cleaner and more efficient means for mixed fibre separation
  • Automated front-end sorting of textile waste
  • Alternative high-value utilisation of by-products and development of new functional materials
  • Environmentally benign processes for dye removal and natural dyes development
The team from MSE comprises Prof Hu Xiao (Co-Director, RGE-NTU SusTex), who will be leading the centre’s research efforts, and Assoc Prof Dalton Tay (Co-Deputy Director, RGE-NTU SusTex).

Research works carried out in RGE-NTU SusTex will complement the pilot textile recycling plant in Singapore, which will be launched as early as 2024, as part of an overall investment into Singaporean textile recycling capacities.

"Some countries are already recycling textiles, but many of their methods require chemicals.
We want to use greener technologies to recycle textiles […]
This collaboration between NTU and RGE is really the first of its kind."
