Our Focus

A Comprehensive Approach To Cancer Prevention And Early Detection

Crafting advanced, novel risk prediction models and screening methods, such as artificial intelligence risk prediction models focused on Singapore’s context.

In primary care, testing and evaluating cancer screening strategies, and supporting cancer risk communication and health services research.

Developing postgraduate courses, workshops, conferences, and policy and practice initiatives to train the next generation of experts.

We engage and involve patients and the public from the start so that they help to design and conduct research studies, ensuring our work is patient-centred.

RISE co-hosts inaugural CanPREVENT Symposium, over 220 scientists, cancer epidemiologists, clinicians, health-system leaders, policymakers and patient partners came together to advance cancer prevention and early detection.

Our Impact

Transforming Patient Outcomes & Public Health

Our work will improve how we identify at-risk populations and facilitate earlier, more effective interventions, directly leading to a reduction in cancer incidences and mortality.

This will not only save lives and improve the quality of life for individuals across Singapore, but also decrease healthcare costs associated with late-stage treatment.

Overview

The Research Institute for Cancer Prevention, Screening and Early Detection (RISE), is a joint research institute recently established by National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), dedicated to address critical challenges in cancer prevention and early detection. This strategic partnership combines LKCMedicine's academic excellence in medical education and research with NCCS's clinical expertise, research and comprehensive cancer care capabilities, creating a powerful platform for translational research and innovation. RISE aims to be a leading Asian institution in clinical translational research and education for cancer prevention and early detection, fostering local partnerships across Singaporean institutions, hospitals, and polyclinics and driving international collaborations with leading primary care and early detection researchers. Primary care plays a critical role in early detection, through increasing participation in cancer screening, and judiciously identifying patients requiring investigation of cancer symptoms, making it a cornerstone of RISE’s collaborative framework.

RISE’s overarching research priorities are structured around three areas:

1. Precision Health: Focusing on developing advanced risk prediction models and innovative screening methods.

2. Primary Care: Dedicated to test evaluation and implementation strategies, cancer risk communication and health services research.

3. Education: Committed to developing postgraduate courses, workshops, conferences, policy/practice initiatives to train the next generation of experts.

Through these interconnected strategic areas, RISE aims to create a comprehensive approach to cancer prevention that spans from laboratory discovery to population-level implementation, ensuring that scientific advances translate into meaningful improvements in public health outcomes. Additionally, the introduction of Healthier SG offers an unparalleled opportunity to improve the delivery of cancer screening services in primary care. Patients enrolled with a family doctor in either polyclinic or private GP clinic will require an annual Health Plan, which includes cancer screening. RISE aims to inform future models of multi-cancer screening that could be applicable to the Healthier SG framework.

Lastly, RISE will embed Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) from the start, forging strong ties with initiatives like HABITS and OPEN. This commitment ensures that patients, caregivers, and communities are actively involved in designing and conducting research studies, making RISE’s work truly patient-centred.
