Assoc. Prof. Winnie Sung awarded MOE AcRF Tier 1 Grant

Congratulations Sung Tier 1 - 1:2025

Associate Professor Winnie Sung has been awarded the MOE AcRF Tier 1 Grant (Call 1/2025) for her research project Epistemic Blinkering.

Congratulations, Prof Sung!

Abstract:

There are various ways we could be epistemically blinkered in everyday life. Imagine a parent who believes that her child is better than other children. A chef who has only lived in the mountains knows the food ingredients in her region well but nothing about seafood ingredients. A fisherman who has always looked at cloud formations resists new technologies that detect approaching storms. In these examples, the agents are all epistemically blinkered in some ways. This does not necessarily mean that they have false beliefs. But they are somehow being obscured from seeing something else that is also true. My project seeks to integrate diverse perspectives and analyse what can influence our epistemic view. My focus will be on the ways in which certain kinds of blinkering (particularly those that do not generate false beliefs) prevent an epistemic agent from forming true beliefs, and perhaps more important true beliefs.
