Winner of SGInnovate’s Falling Walls Lab Singapore 2023 – Dr Tan Pei Leng

We are pleased to share that Dr Tan Pei Leng emerged as the winner of SGInnovate's Falling Walls Lab Singapore 2023. Pei Leng was selected as the winner out of 14 presenters shortlisted from 37 entries.

At the Falling Walls Lab Singapore 2023 pitch competition, Pei Leng presented her work with her PhD supervisor, Associate Professor Tan Lay Poh, on a novel way to treat large burn wounds. Treating large burn wounds is sometimes difficult because there are not many healthy locations to use for skin transplants. This complexity frequently causes wounds to take longer to heal, putting patients at risk for serious wound infections. Her invention allows for the encapsulation of skin cells into microspheres from a small skin sample, creating a medium for the cells to develop into a bigger sheet of skin that may later be grafted into burn sites.

Pei Leng will compete at the global Falling Walls Lab finale in Berlin, Germany, for the title of Breakthrough Winner of the Year and a cash prize, among other international champions from Lab locations such as Sydney, Uganda, and Madrid.
