Toxic effects found when gut bacteria is exposed to artificial sweeteners
We are pleased to share that the research conducted by Associate Professor Alfred Tok and his team has been featured on multiple media platforms. The research work and findings are associated to the toxicity of artificial sweeteners and sports supplements on human health. The team included researchers from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.
Commonly used in food and drinks, artificial sweeteners could be toxic to the human gut, according to research carried out by the team from Singapore and Israel. The effects of 6 artificial sweeteners approved by the US Food and Drug Authority, as well as 10 sports supplements containing these sweeteners, were tested on genetically modified bioluminescent bacteria serving as a model for the human gut. The findings were published in the research journal ‘Molecules’.
