The Master of Science Programme in Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is designed to provide students with advanced and practical knowledge. By utilising modern online learning tools alongside conventional face-to-face teaching, the 12-month programme offers flexibility in course selection, allowing students to tailor their education to meet their interests and career goals.
This programme emphasises theoretical understanding and practical application, preparing graduates for impactful careers in various domains of materials science and engineering.
MSE Specialisations (new)
For students who wish to develop additional depth in a specific area, the MSc now offers two optional specialisation pathways, introduced to reflect evolving industry and research priorities.
NanoMaterials
Designed for students interested in materials at the nanoscale, this pathway supports careers in:
Electronics and semiconductors
Advanced functional materials
Healthcare and medical technologies
Students complete a curated set of electives covering nanomaterials fundamentals, properties, fabrication, and applications.
Sustainable Materials
This pathway supports students aiming to work at the intersection of materials science, sustainability, and circularity, with relevance to:
Low-carbon and circular materials systems
Polymer and materials processing
Sustainability-driven product and materials design
Students may opt into a specialisation track either at the start of the programme or during the stipulated course registration period. Those who choose not to take a specialisation will graduate with a general MSc (Materials Science and Engineering) degree.
These specialisations will be available to students admitted from August 2026 Intake (AY2026/2027 Semester 1) onwards. Please note that specialisation is optional and not a programme requirement.

1) Default route - MSc students will be enrolled on the coursework study option by default (General Electives: 30 AUs).
Opt-in routes – (Optional)
2) Specialisation study option - MSc students may opt in to pursue specialisation by choosing either NanoMaterials or Sustainable Materials during the course registration period. Please note that (General Electives: 18 AUs + Specialisation Electives: 12 AUs)
3) Dissertation study option - MSc students may opt in to pursue coursework study (24 AUs) and Dissertation study (6 AUs). For more information, please click here.
4) FlexiMasters to MSc Degree Pathway - Students who are Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible to pursue the Master of Science through the FlexiMasters route. The FlexiMasters programme will be subsidised by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). Please click here for more information.

Applicants without TOEFL/IELTS would still be eligible to apply, but they may be subjected to an interview/test if deemed necessary by the School. GRE is not required for MSc programme (by coursework).

Master of Science Scholarships
You are eligible for Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering scholarship if you are a local or international student seeking admission as a full-time candidate pursuing a Master of Science programme at NTU. The maximum duration of the award is one year. The scholarships are renewable per semester, subject to satisfactory progress. Renewal of scholarship is subject to satisfactory periodic review. The scholarship will be terminated if the candidate is issued a warning or placed on probation.

Please note that there is a maximum credits for course registration allowed per semester:
- Full time M.Sc. student could take maximum 15AUs of courses in each semester.
- Part time M.Sc. student could take maximum 9AUs of courses in each semester.
A coursework student with poor academic performance will be subjected to the following actions:
- Academic warning if TGPA < 2.50 in any term of study
- Termination of Candidature if TGPA < 2.50 for the second consecutive term of study.
