A MS8001 is available to Ph.D. students only. All Ph.D. students are required to complete a 39-hour (3 AUs) communication course to fulfil the requirements of the Communications / Writing Training Programme. Students may complete either MS8001 or any other communication courses for the programme (please refer here for information on the eligible courses offered by other schools). The credits (3 AUs) earned from any of the communication courses will not count towards the coursework credits (18 AUs) required to be accumulated by Ph.D. students within their candidature confirmation period (before Ph.D. Qualifying Examination). The course must be completed before the submission of the thesis.

B HWG702 and HWG703 are available to and compulsory for full-time Ph.D. students only. These courses are offered by the Centre for Teaching, Learning & Pedagogy (CTLP). All full-time Ph.D. students are required to complete the two courses within their candidature confirmation period (before Ph.D. Qualifying Examination). For students under NTU Research Scholarship, the stipend increment will only be granted after the completion of both coursesStudents may be exempted from the courses if they meet the exemption criteria. Please note that HWG703 is a prerequisite course for HWG702. Students must complete or be exempted from HWG703 before they are allowed to be registered for HWG702. HWG702 will be pre-registered by the school for all eligible students from their second semester of study (registration of HWG702 will be delayed to the third or fourth semester if the student is not exempted from HWG703 and has yet to complete the course).

D Freshman students
may only access GSCRS and register for courses after they have completed the online matriculation formalities.

Students may register and deregister from courses only within the course registration periods stipulated above. Students are advised to verify the courses they have registered for before the end of the second course registration period. No changes to the registered courses will be allowed thereafter.

Please note that all students are not allowed to repeat the courses that they have completed for any of their previous NTU programmes (Master of Science, Master of Engineering, FlexiMasters, etc.) during their current programme of study.

Coursework Students – Master of Science (MSE)

The following are the academic loads for students in MSE coursework programme:

Student TypeAcademic Load
Full-Time Coursework StudentsUp to 15 AUs per semester
Part-Time Coursework StudentsUp to 9 AUs per semester

Research Students – Doctor of Philosophy (MSE) & Master of Engineering (MSE)

All research students will be placed on the waiting list for their registered coursesE during the course registration periods. Course registrations submitted by research students will only be approved and confirmed by the school after the end of each course registration period. All students will be notified of their confirmed courses via email notification from the Office of Academic Services on 18 Jul 2023 (Tue) for Period 1 and 25 Aug 2023 (Fri) for Period 2.

MSE research students are given priority on the waiting list for the enrolment of all MSE courses. However, please note that course enrolment is highly dependent on the available course vacancies, which may be capped and not be expanded at the discretion of the course coordinator. Hence, all research students are reminded that their enrolment on courses they have registered for is not guaranteed even if enrolment priority is given to them, especially for oversubscribed courses as the chances of being enrolled on these courses will be low.

The following is the academic load for students in MSE research programmes:

Student TypeAcademic Load
All Research StudentsUp to 3 coursesE per semester

MSE research students are not allowed to register for more than three coursesE in a semester. Students who have registered for courses within the academic load are not required to submit the GSCRS course registration form to the school for approval. The course registrations for these students will automatically be approved and confirmed by the school after the end of each course registration period (subject to the availability of course vacancies as stipulated above)

Students may register for an additional fourth courseE in the semester only if they have strong justifications to do so. The appeal for the course registration is required to be supported by the following:
  • Student's letter or email detailing the justifications with supervisor's endorsement
  • GSCRS course registration form with supervisor’s endorsement

The appeal supported by the above-stated documents are to be submitted to the school via email for approval by 12 Jul 2023 (Wed), 12pm for Period 1 and 23 Aug 2023 (Wed), 12pm for Period 2. Late submissions will strictly not be entertained.

E Excluding ERWA01, HWG702, HWG703, and MS8001 (or other communication courses). ERWA01 will be pre-registered by the Research Integrity and Ethics Office (RIEO) for all eligible students in their first semester of study. HWG702 will be pre-registered by the school for all eligible students in their second semester of study. The available vacancies for HWG703 and MS8001 will be allocated to students on a first-come, first-served basis (no waiting list for these courses).

Research students who are registering for cross-school or cross-programme courses (courses not offered to the student’s programme of study) are required to submit their registrations for the courses by 12 Jul 2023 (Wed), 5pm for Period 1 and 21 Aug 2023 (Mon), 11:59pm for Period 2.

Students may withdraw from any of their registered courses after the end of the second course registration period. All course withdrawal requests are to be submitted to the school via email for approval by 3 Nov 2023 (Fri), 12pm. The email shall indicate the course to be withdrawn from and the reasons for the withdrawal. Late submissions will strictly not be entertained.

Students will be given a ‘W’ grade for the courses they have withdrawn from in the semester, which will be reflected in all academic records including the official transcript. The grading will be excluded in the computation of the student’s Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Please note that students will still be liable for the tuition fees of the courses that they have withdrawn from in the semester.

Students who fail to withdraw from a course and subsequently do not attend the examination for the course will be deemed to have sat and failed the course, and an ‘F’ grade for the course will be reflected in all academic records including the official transcript. The grading will be included in the computation of the student’s CGPA.

The course results for AY2023-2024 Semester 1 are expected to be released on 2 Jan 2024. All students will be notified via their NTU email when the course results are released.
