Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) & Master of Engineering (MEng)

Programme Overview
MSE offers higher degree programmes by research on a part-time and full-time basis, with a minimum and maximum period of candidature. They are:

Potential students may submit their applications. Those who are accepted may be admitted in either January or August, subject to the approval of the University.
The student will work under the supervision of a faculty member whose research interests are in the area proposed by the student. MSE conducts research across a variety of materials-related fields. The major research areas are:

Programme Structure (applicable to students admitted from AY2026-2027 onwards)
The coursework requirements for the two programmes are:
- M.Eng. - 6 Academic Units with an average grade of B- or CGPA of 3.00
- Ph.D. - 12 Academic Units, with:
- an average grade of B or CGPA of 3.50 (for non-NPGS/PGA recipients); OR
- an average grade of B+ or CGPA of 4.00 (for NPGS/PGA recipients)
In both programmes, no course grade can be below C+ or grade point of less than 2.50
(ii) Completion of a report and an oral presentation
PhD students who are granted elective course exemptions may sit for the PhD QE from the 6th month of candidature.
All Ph.D. students must have at least one accepted first author or co-first author publication at the point of their Ph.D. thesis submission. Patents cannot be used to fulfil this publication requirement.
