Synopsis

LT5001 is designed to give a thorough grounding in all four language skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, at the beginning level. The lecture provides grammar explanation, analysis, and cultural background.  The course aims at developing a basic understanding and an appreciation of the salient linguistic features. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to the cultural background of Thailand within the context of language teaching and become a fairy confident language user in a range of predictable every-day situations. Sections are conducted in English and Thai.

 

Pre-requisite:
No previous knowledge of the language

Learning Outcomes

  • Write and read Thai alphabets and vowels.
  • Be able to convert Thai scripts into phonetic symbols and vice versa.
  • Construct simple sentences and questions in response to basic everyday communicative situations, such as yourself, your family, thing/object, place/direction, food, and time.
  • Apply appropriate vocabulary on a variety of contexts in daily life.
  • Identify information provided in simplified Thai texts and audio/video files.

Synopsis
This course aims to improve and enhance all four skills, speaking, listening, writing, and reading, in an integrated manner, with emphasis on developing communicative skills in order to carry out conversations on a range of topics related to daily life. The course will also enable you to acquire skills to speak and write Thai with confidence.

  • Deploy an active vocabulary related a variety of situations such as, shopping at the local market and store, scheduling time for activities, and giving directions & planning for travelling in Thai.
  • Express simple opinions or requests in a familiar context.
  • Identify, explain and discuss main ideas in listening passages.
  • Write a short description on familiar or predictable matters using Thai scripts.
  • Identify and explain ideas presented in reading materials on familiar matters, such as products/signs, and simple reports.

Synopsis
This course aims at expanding your language skills by introducing more polyfunctional words, complex sentence structures, and colloquial expressions. The classroom tasks in this course naturally demand a higher level of participation and class discussion. During the course, you are expected to write and read Thai texts by using Thai scripts or with minimal guidance from phonetic symbols.

  • Deploy an active vocabulary related to various scenarios such as scheduling time for activities, describing people/things/feelings/action/state, and visiting a doctor in Thai.
  • Express yourself more accurately and naturally in speaking using more complex words and structures. 
  • Identify, explain and discuss main ideas in reading and listening passages.
  • Write long essays on familiar or predictable matters using Thai script.
  • Read and interpret accurately a variety of formal and informal texts (blog, email, essay) on familiar topics

Synopsis

This course aims to improve and enhance your communicative competence using theme-based and communicative activities. You will be able to strengthen your knowledge of the Thai language and culture, as well as language learning strategies in order to be effective language learners and apply the newfound skills in real-life situations through a variety of selected topics in relevant contexts and authentic communicative tasks. You are expected to write and read Thai texts using the Thai script with minimal guidance from phonetic symbols during the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • Express yourself more accurately and naturally using more polyfunctional words and complex sentence structures.
  • Converse fluently in Thai through a variety of situations/topics and engage in more detailed conversations on specific topics, such as describing and discussing feelings, giving an opinion, asking for or offering some advice on relevant topics, etc.
  • Analyse and apply the vocabulary used in an informal context.
  • Listen to, read, and interpret authentic spoken, written, and multimedia content on topics relevant to daily life
  • Write essays using the Thai script about yourself from the learned grammar and vocabulary.
