Titled “Lithium-Polymer Battery Monitoring Using Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) Imaging”, Kezia’s project investigated the use of QUS imaging as a non-destructive technique for monitoring lithium-polymer batteries during charge and discharge cycles. The study examined the relationship between QUS parameters and the battery's state of charge, demonstrating the potential of ultrasound-based methods for real-time battery monitoring.
Speaking about her URECA experience, Kezia said, “As an Environmental Engineering student, having the opportunity to work on ultrasound imaging, signal processing, and battery monitoring research under the guidance of a Civil Engineering faculty member has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor, Assistant Professor Kim Gun, for his guidance and support, and to my mentor, Mr Baek Seungo, for his patience, encouragement, and willingness to share his expertise.”
Kezia also expressed her appreciation to the members of the CURE Lab, her URECA peers, and NTU for their support throughout her URECA journey.

Recognising that cement production is a major contributor to carbon emissions in Singapore's built environment, Zheng Long’s project explored palm oil fly ash (POFA), which remains largely underused as a potential Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM).
Titled “An Environmental Lens on Singapore's Construction Carbon Footprint: Opportunities in Low-Carbon Cement, & Life Cycle Analysis”, the project investigated the extent to which POFA could reduce the carbon footprint of Singapore's concrete, while maintaining its strength and practical suitability for construction. Through a combination of laboratory testing and life cycle assessment, the study quantified the actual carbon trade-offs involved in using POFA, moving beyond generic sustainability claims.

Reflecting on the award, Zheng Long said, “I'm truly honoured to receive this award and deeply grateful to CEE, my supervisor, Professor Grzegorz Lisak, and my mentor, Kevin Matthew Manurung, for their guidance throughout my URECA journey. They were always ready to point me in the right direction while still giving me room to learn independently. My URECA experience taught me much more than technical skills, including how to navigate uncertainty. This pushed me to think critically about how research can translate into real-world impact. URECA is a rare opportunity to work closely with CEE professors on meaningful projects, and far less daunting than it sounds. I hope more students will take that leap to experience that for themselves!”

URECA acronym of Undergraduate Research Experience on CAmpus, is a university wide undergraduate research programme established in 2004 to cultivate a research culture and nurture research capabilities early in undergraduates’ university education.
