
About GTG Lab:
Geotechnical Laboratory
The Geotechnical Lab occupied a total area of approximately 1154 square meters, supports research in the form of undergraduate final year projects, postgraduate research projects and funded research projects in geotechnical engineering. It consist of four units:
Soil Mechanics
- Soil classification and engineering property testing
- Demonstrations of seepage, liquefaction, and earth pressure principles
- Teaching and routine geotechnical laboratory activities
Engineering Geology
- Mineral and rock specimen collections
- Rock testing and characterisation facilities
- Geological and rock mechanics models
Geotechnics Research
- Advanced soil testing for research applications
- Specialised equipment for unsaturated soil behaviour
- Consolidation, permeability, and cyclic loading studies
Geotechnics Workshop
- In-situ geotechnical investigation equipment
- Field testing and ground monitoring instruments
- Drilling, cone penetration, and pressuremeter systems
Transportation Laboratory
Transportation Laboratory consists of three main areas:
Pavement Engineering
- Specialized equipment for testing subgrade soils, aggregates, and bitumen properties
- Asphalt mix design and performance evaluation facilities
- In-situ pavement testing for skid resistance, texture, roughness, and deflection
Traffic Engineering
- Advanced traffic data collection and monitoring equipment
- Speed measurement, traffic noise monitoring, and vehicle classification systems
- Video recording and analysis facilities for traffic studies and research
Transportation Planning
- High-performance computing facilities for transport modelling and simulation
- Industry-standard software for traffic analysis, planning, and control
- Artificial intelligence and driving simulation platforms for advanced research
Laboratory Facilities and Equipment
Covering eight specialised laboratory areas, the GTG Laboratory provides advanced facilities and equipment for teaching, research, and consultancy in geotechnics and transportation engineering.
