Professional Internship

Our Professional Internship programmes aim to enhance the employability of our undergraduate students by providing practical experience in applying their knowledge and skills to real-world problems.

While I was still interning at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), I managed to secure employment during my final semester via GSK’s Future Leaders’ Programme. This gave me a channel to explore and apply the skills I picked up as a CBC undergraduate, in the context of the pharmaceutical industry. The experience helped me to settle into my job quickly.”

For Chemistry and Biological Chemistry students (U20 and before), the Professional Internship programme consists of the module CM4081, which is compulsory for students who opt not to do a Final Year Project. The module can be read during either Semester 1 or Semester 2.

    Internship Application

Once you are eligible to participate in the Professional Internship programme, you will be contacted via email by NTU's Career & Attachment Office (CAO) one semester before the internship. If you are planning to participate in the Professional Internship during Year 4 (rather than doing a Final Year Project), please act accordingly to instructions in the email.

The CAO email will contain information about the possible internship positions, and how to apply for them.

    You will have two options:

    • Choose an internship position from the CAO list.
Note that you must provide your resume as part of the application.
    • Find an internship position yourself.
For a self-sourced internship, the job scope must be related to the study programme, and must include a sufficient technical component related to chemistry. The internship is subject to approval by the Division and the CAO. The CAO email will provide instructions about how to request for approval.

After the CAO has assigned you to an internship position, you are not allowed to switch to another internship position, or to a Final Year Project.

    Overseas Entrepreneurship Programme (OEP)

The education and training of the entrepreneurially-minded individual is an important part of the entrepreneurial education process. Beyond methodologies and know-how, aspiring entrepreneurs require the right networks and contacts. OEP allows entrepreneurially-inclined students the opportunity to combine a 1-year internship at a start-up company, in a vibrant entrepreneurial eco-system, while studying at a prestigious partner university.

OEP is a one-year programme which consists of 20AU (6-month programme consisting of 10AUs is also available), with 10AU categorised under Professional Internship and another 10AU utilised from their UE/BDE. To facilitate the credit transfer for OEP, Engineering students who take up the programme will have their degree requirements adjusted to move the 10AU of UE to Core. There is no change in the total AU.
