Executive Certificate in Carbon Markets

Climate change poses significant challenges to the environment and society, demanding substantial and urgent action from all stakeholders.  A key policy response emerging globally is the utilisation of carbon markets as a tool to price greenhouse gas emissions and direct mitigation efforts in concrete ways.

Recognising the important role that carbon markets play in the journey to Net Zero, and as part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, Singapore aims to become a leading carbon services and trading hub in Asia. To achieve this vision, there is a growing demand for talented professionals in Singapore and across the region to support the development of this critical ecosystem.

The Executive Certificate in Carbon Markets is designed to help meet this need by equipping business leaders and professionals with a solid foundation in carbon markets (compliance, sectoral and voluntary), carbon measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) and key elements of the carbon project lifecycle. Offered in three modules, the intensive nine-day programme is the most comprehensive carbon markets and trading course in Singapore, addressing the rising demand for expertise in these areas.

You will explore climate action essentials, delve into the details of carbon markets mechanics, and gain practical insights into the corporate toolkit of greenhouse gas measurement, target setting, and mitigation action. The programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the evolving landscape of carbon markets and drive meaningful environmental impact.

"Having had positive experiences with Nanyang Business School through other Executive Certificate programs on sustainability topics, I was eager to enroll in their new Carbon Markets course. As someone transitioning into the carbon space, I found the course both informative and engaging, with valuable discussions with lecturers and fellow participants.

The opportunity to learn from leading experts in both academia and industry about the mechanisms that drive carbon markets was particularly beneficial. Although I work for a major climate solutions firm, my role does not provide many opportunities to engage in carbon project development, so the chance to dive into these processes was incredibly valuable. It helped me appreciate that creating a high-quality carbon project is no easy feat!

A key takeaway from the course was the understanding that while the carbon market is still evolving, there is rapidly developing governance and innovation aimed at maintaining the integrity of high-quality carbon markets. This helped me understand the frameworks and policies supporting the growth and success of the carbon space, and it has made it easier for me to follow and contribute to some of our internal technical discussions.

I also appreciated the in-depth discussions on Emissions Trading Systems and carbon taxes, which provided a clearer understanding of how these factors interact within the market. The class exercise, led by Prof. Daniel Lee, left a lasting impression on me. This thoughtfully designed activity involved role-playing, where we took on different positions to negotiate key aspects such as carbon tax implementation, subsidy provision, and ITMO (Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes) negotiations with other teams. The hands-on nature of this exercise offered valuable insights into the complexities and challenges of the carbon market, sharpening my understanding of real-world obstacles. In particular, it required us to consider the interests of various stakeholders and the impact on different industries, enabling us to derive outcomes that align with achieving our country’s climate action plan.

As someone working in the carbon industry, the course also helped me identify common questions and misconceptions the public may have about carbon markets. It deepened my knowledge and enabled me to better explain these concepts to my clients. Furthermore, the exchange of market practices among the lecturers and other professionals was invaluable. It allowed me to compare our internal practices with those of others and identify ways to improve and innovate.

I would highly encourage anyone seeking a career in the carbon space or looking to understand the impact of climate risk and opportunities to take this course."

" A big shoutout to Prof Daniel for designing such an educational and enlightening course. I really appreciated how it combined foundational theory with practical insights from professionals in the field. As someone new to the space, navigating the carbon world hasn’t been easy—the industry can feel rather opaque, even with the help of AI and Google. This course helped bridge that knowledge gap in a way that online resources simply couldn’t.

What I found especially valuable was how intentionally curated the content was—not just to teach what carbon credits are, but to equip us with insights that have real commercial application. Every topic felt purposeful, relevant, and directly tied to how things work in practice—perfect for anyone looking to build, invest, or operate in this space with confidence.

The entire course brought the carbon credits ecosystem to life. It helped me understand the dynamics and sensitivities involved in balancing carbon initiatives—something that suddenly clicked not just for me, but for many of my course mates. Each session was well-paced and grounded in the realities of the market.

On top of all that, I really enjoyed the energy and delivery style—interactive, engaging, and always drawing us in with real-world practitioners who live and breathe the carbon space, offering the kind of unfiltered insight you can’t get from a textbook.

And best of all, we had we had the rare privilege and opportunity to ask questions directly to professionals who were genuinely passionate and generous about sharing their knowledge which to me made the experience feel less like a lecture and more like being part of an ongoing conversation in the carbon markets community."

"The Executive Certificate in Carbon Markets by NTU has been an incredibly valuable experience for me, especially as I step into a new role focused on expanding my organization’s business in this sector. The course accelerated my learning through a well-structured curriculum that provided a thorough understanding of the entire carbon market ecosystem. It explained the fundamental concepts, gave context of key milestones in climate action and current status, and explored the challenges, opportunities, and trends shaping the future of carbon markets.

What truly set the program apart for me was the opportunity to engage directly with industry leaders and practitioners through panel discussions, guest lectures, and peer interactions. I leave the program better equipped to navigate the evolving carbon landscape and more confident in driving my company’s contribution to the global Net Zero transition. My sincere thanks to Professor Daniel Lee and the NTU team for curating such a relevant and inspiring course."

"As a public service officer working in R&D, I recently took on a new portfolio in decarbonisation. With a particular interest in the compliance carbon market, I enrolled inthe Executive Certificate in Carbon Markets offered by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and it has proven to be a highly valuable experience.

The course provided a solid foundation in understanding the structure and function of both voluntary and compliance carbon markets. It comprehensively covered theentire value chain and ecosystem – from policy intent to implementation mechanisms, trading schemes, and market dynamics. For someone new to this complex andfast-evolving space, the course offered clarity on how various elements interact, and more importantly, why they matter. In local Singaporean terms, the course reallyunpacked the “walao-ness” of the carbon market landscape – its intricacies, interdependencies, and messiness – in a way that was both accessible and thought-provoking.

Echoing other participants, the role-play exercise led by Prof. Daniel Lee on Emissions Trading Systems and carbon taxes was a highlight. It brought the policy design andnegotiation process to life, offering valuable insights into real-world trade-offs and stakeholder tensions.

Overall, the course offered not just theoretical insights but practical perspectives that will be useful as I contribute to shaping decarbonisation pathways within myorganisation. I highly recommend this programme to anyone looking to develop a strong grounding in carbon markets and climate policy implementation."

"The course provided me with a deeper understanding of the global decarbonization framework as well as the key aspects of carbon finance, such as different types of credits (carbon, renewable energy, transition) and how these are generated, verified, traded and terminated. The lectures were informative, insightful and engaging. I completed the course with a sense of fulfillment and an eagerness to learn more and build professional relationships with like-minded individuals who believe in building a “greener” world."
