The research concentrates on biogeochemical processes in plankton communities and studying the cycling of carbon and nutrients in the ocean. The group are studying specific topics concern to how plankton communities sequester carbon from the atmosphere in the ocean, how physiological responses by marine plankton to nutrient starvation affect the cycling of phosphorus in the sea (which is critical for supporting continued productivity of marine ecosystems), and how land-derived dissolved organic matter is processed in coastal waters.
