Environmental Microbiology Laboratory

The research focuses on elucidating the activities and impact of extremophilic organisms (i.e., organisms that can thrive under extreme conditions) in natural and engineered systems. The main research areas are supercritical CO2 microbiology and characterizing Singapore’s geothermal biodiversity. Analyses conducted in the laboratory will include the cultivation of microbial biomass, microscopy, and extraction and purification of nucleic acids, proteins, and metabolites. The laboratory is a “PCR-free zone,” i.e., no amplified DNA products will be permitted inside the lab to maintain a clean environment for handling environmental samples and preparation of environmental DNA.
