UG Admissions: Economics

Economics is a social science that deals with the creation, distribution and consumption of resources. Because it is about people and the real world, Economics enables students to learn about banking, finance, globalisation, and also about broader social issues such as poverty, education, health and the environment. It is a versatile discipline with close links to politics, sociology, psychology, business and finance.

The appeal of Economics lies especially in its application of theory and quantitative methods to contemporary economic problems. It helps students to think logically, rationally and rigorously. Graduates in Economics as such acquire problem-solving skills that prepare them for a wide range of careers both in the public and private sectors.

Double Major BSocSci (Hons)

As a School of College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS), we also offer a Double Major programme. The Double Major programme is a four-year, direct Honours degree programme. Undergraduates will read two majors chosen from among the disciplinary strengths of the four schools in HASS—School of Art, Design and Media (ADM), School of Humanities (SoH), SSS, and Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI).

The weightage of each major is equal, and students will have the opportunity to complete Graduate Projects from each major.

Double Major combinations (with Economics) housed under SSS:

  • BSocSci (Hons) in Economics & Media Analytics
  • BSocSci (Hons) in Economics & Psychology
  • BSocSci (Hons) in Economics & Public Policy and Global Affairs

BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Sciences and Economics

Students can also opt for the integrated degree, BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Sciences and Economics, which is rather popular.

This integrated degree, aimed at students with strong quantitative aptitude and a keen interest in Economics, is jointly offered by the Division of Mathematical Sciences in the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Social Sciences.

At NTU, students majoring in Economics will also have the opportunity to pursue a Second Major.

Qualified students may take a second major in another discipline offered within the School of Social Sciences, or one offered by another School within the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS).

Students will need to read 11 courses specific to the field of study, which includes both the Major Core Subjects and Major Prescribed Electives. They will have to complete 135 to 138 Academic Units to be eligible to graduate with a Second Major. Students will graduate with a BSocSci (Hons) in their First Major. The Second Major will be shown on the final transcript and students will receive an additional certificate.
