With Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat virtually blocked from the premiership, the Pheu Thai party now has a clear shot at placing one of its own in Government House- property tycoon Srettha Thavisin or political scion Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Since coming in second in the May general election, Pheu Thai has publicly stood by Pita through two attempts at becoming prime minister. "Pheu Thai is steering a tricky course between trying to preserve its image as a pro-democratic party opposed to the involvement of the military in Thailand's politics and a strong desire to return to the government benches," said Professor Duncan McCargo, from SSS@NTU's Public Policy and Global Affairs Programme and author of a book on Pheu Thai founder and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as well as one on the Future Forward party.
