Ukrainian University Honours Partnership with NTU Prof Jacob Stegenga

Professor Jacob Stegenga, Chair of the School of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University, has been named Honorary Professor of Kharkiv National Medical University (KhNMU) in Ukraine. The Rector, Professor Valery Myasoedov, conferred the title at a ceremony at the university on 28 May, which Professor Stegenga attended in person at the close of a visit to Kharkiv.

The honour recognises a collaboration that has run since 2023, spanning teaching and research. Professor Stegenga is a world-renowned philosopher of science specialising in the philosophy of medicine, biomedical ethics, and medical epistemology.

Professor Stegenga's work on causal reasoning, the reliability of medical evidence, and the foundations of evidence-based medicine is widely used across the global academic community and has been integrated into the KhNMU curriculum. Prof Stegenga has contributed to its conferences, roundtables, and masterclasses on bioethics and the philosophy of medicine, and in the 2025–2026 academic year, taught a series of lectures to graduate students within their Philosophy of Science course.

The visit gave Professor Stegenga the chance to meet in person the academic community he had until then worked with online. Kateryna Karpenko, Head of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences, together with Vice Rector Oleksii Trotsenko and staff of the Museum of Medicine, hosted his time at the university and in the city.

At the ceremony, Professor Myasoedov thanked Professor Stegenga for his support of the university and his contribution to international academic cooperation. Professor Stegenga spoke about the value of international academic solidarity and his commitment to deepening the partnership with KhNMU and other institutions in Ukraine.
