Ten Thousand Points of View.
Abstract:
The influx of Western ideas and technology into Japan in the 1700’s slowly transformed science, medicine, and the visual arts. One result was the short-lived but highly influential school of painting known as Akita Ranga. The course of this practice-based research in creative writing will result in a fictional zuuihitsu (“journal of random thoughts”) centred on the life and intellectual milieu of one prominent Akita Ranga scholar, Naotake Odano: samurai, painter, and primary illustrator of Japan’s first textbook of human anatomy.
