A member of the audience at a talk featuring three local Chinese writers on 29 May said a foreign writer had opined that Singapore’s literary scene could not flourish because the country was too safe and boring. Assoc Prof Quah Sy Ren from NTU Chinese programme hosted the talk, which is part of the Zaobao Literary Festival. He pointed out that the foreign writer was basing his opinion on stereotypes and had very clearly been uninformed of the reality in Singapore. The festival also featured a talk themed “From Norwegian Wood to Killing Commendatore” by Chinese translator Lin Shaohua, and hosted by NTU Chinese translation lecturer Cui Feng.
