​News | Singlish is not English. That’s not a bad thing

​In a commentary, Linguistics and Multilingual Studies Assoc Prof Tan Ying Ying of NTU’s School of Humanities—a Singaporean linguist working on languages in Singapore and a native speaker of Singlish—argues that there are two very distinctive “Singaporean” linguistic products in Singapore—Singapore English and Singlish. While Singapore English is English spoken with a Singaporean accent, and when written, is formal and not unlike other standard varieties of English around the world, Singlish is a completely different language and not a type of English, nor Chinese, nor Malay.
