As ASEAN countries develop, more youths are aware that acquiring regional languages other than English can help to improve their communication ability and open up opportunities, hence taking up these languages in university. Last year, the number of graduates who once studied ASEAN languages in NUS, NTU and SMU was 1730, which is 10 per cent more than 1550 in 2013.
