News | My name has been changed to hanyu pinyin; friends ask, “Who are you?”
A debate arose after Hong Kong artists’ names in Cantonese Romanisation are changed to hanyu pinyin, the official Romanisation system for standard Chinese in China, in an exhibition. Assoc Prof Uganda Kwan from NTU Singapore’s Chinese Programme shared how the Cantonese Romanisation system came about and said that people may not know the Hong Kong artists’ previous works if they only see their pinyin names.
