​News | Local scholars: May Fourth Movement's impact on Chinese communities in Singapore and Malaysia relations is not as big as imagined

​Various experts shared about the impact that China’s May Fourth Movement had on the Chinese communities in Singapore and Malaysia. Assoc Prof Y​​ow Cheun Hoe, head of the Chinese Programme at NTU, director of NTU’s Centre for Chinese Language and Culture, and the Chinese Heritage Centre, said the movement did not affect the way Chinese language was taught in Singapore and Malaysia. NTU Assoc Prof Quah Sy Ren, who specialises in cultural theory, also pointed out that Western ideals and thoughts were introduced early on in Singapore, even before the May Fourth Movement.
