The reporter interviewed several female readers of Jin Yong’s martial arts novels, following the recent demise of the renowned author. Yang Jinghui (transliteration), who is studying for her education doctorate at NIE, said the female characters in Jin’s novels seemed to be unable to do without love, but she likes the philosophies portrayed in the novels. Lu Xiaowen (transliteration), a PhD student in NTU’s Chinese Programme, said most of the female characters are smart and highly skilled in martial arts, a departure from women only being labelled as “gentle”; unfortunately they are still trapped by love, which makes their character flatter.
