| Event write-up | Eileen Chang (张爱玲) has never been to Nanyang for her whole life. However, Nanyang is not a stranger for her. From time to time, Nanyang images appears in Eileen Chang's literary imagination and becomes a complex entity that cannot be neglected. In her novels, essays and screenplays, Nanyang images become specific story segments, characters, culture; and concepts involve the religions and arts of Nanyang in a variety of ways. In addition, Eileen Chang also calmly observed and analyzed the groups of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, forming a unique style of Nanyang writing and constructing a different Nanyang imagination in the history of Chinese modern literature. She influenced the writings of contemporary Chinese writers in Southeast Asia. |
| Speaker (s) | 王艳芳教授 Professor Wang Yanfang School of Chinese Language and Literature, Jiangsu Normal University Professor Wang Yanfang, School of Chinese Language and Literature, Jiangsu Normal University, received her Ph.D. at Nanjing University and Post Doctorate in Soochow University. She is currently a visiting scholar in the School of Humanities, Nanyang Technological University. Her main research fields are Contemporary Chinese Literature, Feminine literature and Overseas Chinese Literature. She has published: Feminine Writing and Self-identification (2006) (《女性写作与自我认同》), Identity Writing in Different Times：A Study of Hong Kong Feminine Fiction (2015) (《异度时空下的身份书写：香港女性小说研究》), Alone in a world of chaos：Feelings and Communications of Eileen Chang (2015) (《千山独行：张爱玲的情感与交往》), Feminine Literature under the Mass Media Perspectives (2016) (《大众传媒视域下的女性文学》). She also published more than 80 papers on Literary Review (《文学评论》), Modern Chinese Literature Researches Series (《中国现代文学研究丛刊》), Contemporary Writers Review (《当代作家评论》), Comparative Literature in China (《中国比较文学》) and other academic journals. |
