| Event write-up | The seminar is focused on the debates of topics such as "Uniqueness of Malayan Chinese Literature" （"Mahua wen yi du te xing"） and "Literary Culture of Emigrants" （"Qiao min wen yi"） erupted around the year of 1948. With the discussion focusing mainly on the issue of "locality", it was a defining moment in Malayan Chinese Literature. The research on the "Uniqueness of Malayan Chinese Literature" have since become an important field of research when discussing literary works of Malayan Chinese, a feat that could only be achieved due to the accumulated efforts by researchers across several generations. This field of study has divided opinions, resulting in a vibrant and dynamic research culture. Miao Xiu and Wei Yun are two renowned pioneers of Malayan Chinese Literature. While their works do share some common features, both of them have a distinctly different style. This seminar aims to return to the basics of literature, and through cross-examinations, analyze the works of these two authors. Through the analysis of the "text" (wen ben), the speaker will explain the "localism" of Malayan Chinese Literature and demonstrate the richness of the "localized" development of literary works amongst Malayan Chinese. |

| Speaker profile/s (if any) | Associate Professor Zhang Jianying is currently a Visiting Research Scholar at the Centre for Chinese Language & Culture (CCLC), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU). Her main research interest is on South-Eastern Asian Chinese Literature and Modern and Contemporary Literature of China. Her published works includes: "A New History of the South-Eastern Asian Chinese-Language Literature", "Research of Literary Language of South-East Asia Chinese-Language Literature" and many research papers published in various Academic Journals. |
