Patient Voices Symposium

Patient Voices Symposium 2025

The second LKCMedicine Patient Voices Symposium, organized by the Office of Patient Engagement (OPEN), saw 308 attendees gain crucial insights into Patient and Public Involvement (PPI). Through the theme "Activate & Elevate: Driving Research and Education Impact Through Patient and Public Involvement," this event is designed to activate researchers, educators, and patients to form meaningful and authentic partnerships. Our goal is to elevate patient voices, ensuring that research and education is patient-informed and directly relevant to the community's needs.

Attendees gleaned several key takeaways from the symposium, focusing on practical implementation and meaningful engagement in PPI. Firstly, the symposium provided valuable lessons for Singapore by offering insights from the UK, Japan, and Singapore on the best practices and common pitfalls of PPI. A central theme was the importance of moving beyond tokenism to meaningful engagement, addressing the critical challenge of how to appropriately balance academic/research priorities with patient priorities. Secondly, participants gained firsthand insights from an experienced patient partner, on how to build authentic collaborations in PPI. The event also highlighted how diverse art forms and storytelling can powerfully elevate patient and public voices, capturing insights often missed by traditional methods, and driving meaningful conversations.

Patient Voices Symposium 2024

The Office of Patient Engagement (OPEN Voices) was officially launched during the Patient Voices Symposium 2024 held at the Toh Kian Chui Annex at the Novena Campus. The inaugural Symposium served as a platform for key stakeholders to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration. The event saw 200 attendees and delved into the significance and impact of patient and public involvement (PPI) in medical research and education.

The symposium brought together a dynamic community of local and international patient partners, advocates, researchers, clinicians, academics, and healthcare professionals to discuss strategies for enhancing patient engagement and elevating patient voices in Singapore. Through various expert talks, the event explored best practices to deepen PPI in medical research and education. Participants also had the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue at the Open Voices Library sessions and were inspired by a patient-composed performance.
