More LKCMedicine students take up electives at Imperial

Following the success of the first LKCMedicine Electives Programme at Imperial in 2017, we hosted 34 of this year’s final-year students for their elective placements from August 28 to October 5. This was a 50% increase in students from the previous year and included some returning students, who visited Imperial in March 2016 for the first Imperial exchange week. We discussed with the students some of their reasons for choosing Imperial for their electives, during a feedback session halfway through the programme.
London is an attractive destination for students and was named the best student city in the world (QS Best Student Cities 2018). With diversity of culture, excellent quality of life and high-quality university education, students are keen to spend their elective period in London.
The elective programme is designed specifically for students from LKCMedicine, with dedicated LKCMedicine events including Induction Day, feedback sessions and Farewell Reception. Students therefore felt that the administrative arrangements for the programme are simpler than applying to other institutions.
One of the key differences which sets the elective experience at Imperial apart from many other institutions is the opportunity to arrange a split elective. Students are given the opportunity to request a variety of specialities and often gain experience across multiple hospitals, which enables students to gain a greater understanding of the National Health Service (NHS) from a range of sites.
