Synopsis

This is an introductory course designed for any undergraduate student who has never learnt Spanish before and is interested in learning this widely-spoken language and about its vibrant cultures. This course practices the four skills of the language in an integrated manner through an action-oriented approach with the aid of a wide range of audiovisual and classroom materials. This beginner course will provide you with a sounding foundation of written and spoken Spanish at the level A1.1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), coupled with some tools for independent learning. It will also equip you with some basic knowledge for cross-cultural situations with Spanish speakers.

No previous knowledge of the language

Learning Outcomes

  • Communicate at beginner’s level that allows you to exchange basic information in the present tense, in formal and informal situations, regarding familiar topics such as family, hobbies, likes and dislikes, daily routine and housing.
  • Read, interpret and comprehend simple authentic spoken, written and multimedia content (email, blog, note, essay) on familiar topics and address comprehension questions related to these.
  • Write short texts dealing with everyday topics, such as a personal ad, a letter describing yourself, a note for a friend, or an email requesting basic information.
  • Discern different Iberian and Latin American varieties of Spanish.
  • Identify and describe different elements of Hispanic culture by focusing on current socio-cultural issues.

Synopsis

This blended learning course, based on the flipped classroom model, aims to actively engage you in learning Spanish. It aims to develop further your reading, writing and conversational skills at an upper beginner's level with English and Spanish as the medium of instruction. Teaching is based on an action-oriented approach to language learning with the aim of developing your pragmatic, linguistic and sociocultural competencies to the A1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This course prepares you to sit for the official external examination DELE A1 (Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language). Through the use of authentic written and audio-visual materials, your knowledge of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world will also be enhanced and expanded.

  • Communicate at a beginner’s level that allows you to discuss a variety of topics confidently using the present and simple past tenses, as well as common expressions to explain current information (e.g. making plans, ordering food, making travelling arrangements, asking for and giving directions, etc.).
  • Write accurately and fluently on a range of topics related to your daily life, using structures in the present and simple past tenses.
  • Read and interpret accurately a variety of formal and informal texts on familiar topics that use basic grammatical structures and vocabulary, such as the present and simple past tenses.
  • Discern different Iberian and Latin American varieties of Spanish.
  • Describe historical and current socio-cultural issues, with a focus on geographical and tourism information about various Hispanic destinations.

Synopsis

This is a blended learning course based on the flipped classroom model, where higher-level verb tenses in different moods (imperative and subjunctive) are introduced, along with a wider range of vocabulary and grammatical structures. All these, along with more complex idiomatic expressions, provide the foundation for a pre-intermediate level in the Spanish language. This course practices the four skills of the language in an integrated manner through an action-oriented approach with the aim of developing students’ pragmatic, linguistic and sociocultural competencies at the B1.1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). After completing this course, you will be ready to sit for the external official examination DELE B1 (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera).

    using more complex structures in the indicative, subjunctive and imperative moods.
  • Read and interpret accurately a variety of formal and informal texts on familiar topics that use a lower-intermediate level of grammatical structures and vocabulary.
  • Discern different Iberian and Latin American varieties of Spanish.
  • Describe historical and current socio-cultural issues.

In this course, you will practice the four skills of the language in an integrated manner through an action-oriented approach with the aim to develop your pragmatic, linguistic and sociocultural competencies at the B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). You will further explore Hispanic cultures and societies through a wider range of personal and social situations and contexts. You will also be encouraged to become a more self-directed learner and to be creative and critical. After completing this course, you will be ready to sit for the external official examination DELE B1 (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera).
