Synopsis
This course is a BDE for any undergraduate student with an interest in the Russian language, culture, study and work life, but with no previous knowledge of the language. In this course you will be introduced to various aspects of the Russian language and learn to communicate in simple everyday situations and personal interactions. You will be trained in all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading & writing) and learn elementary grammatical structures, with a special emphasis on active language production, especially the oral aspect. Audio-visual materials are used in the classroom and Russian is used extensively as the language of instruction (alongside English at the initial stage of the course). The course is a gateway towards studying Russian with the future possibility to sit for the official external examination TORFL/TRKI (The Test of Russian as a Foreign Language); a standardised test supervised by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, conforming to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Learning Outcomes

  • Read and identify information provided in simplified Russian texts.
  • Ask and answer basic questions about yourself, your family, food, living, and hobbies.
  • Ask for and give directions.
  • Listen to and identify information provided in audio files.
  • Write short essays using learned grammar and vocabulary about a familiar topic.
  • Create and act out a short role-play.

Synopsis
This course is a BDE which aims to build on language skills and cultural knowledge acquired either through the beginners’ course (LR5001) or equivalent skills attained in Russia during your student exchange programmes. LR5002 will teach you the fundamentals of the Russian language to the level of A1.2 (CEFR). In this course you will be introduced to more facets of Russian culture, tradition and mentality of its people. Upon the course completion, you will have improved your reading, listening, writing and speaking skills. Through a wide range of teaching materials, such as books, videos, web tutorials, articles, group and paired work and class debates, you will gain further insight into Russian life and culture. The language of instruction will be Russian.

Learning Outcomes

  • Speak coherently with sufficient fluency and accuracy on a range of topics relating to the themes studied: geography, describing a city, plans for the future, hobbies, occupations, and everyday activities.
  • Express an opinion on familiar topics.
  • Prepare a short presentation and improvise in everyday basic situations.
  • Write short essays discussing familiar topics using the present, past simple and the future tense, subordinate clauses, and adverbials.
  • Deploy an active vocabulary on topics concerning everyday life in Russia, such as shopping, socializing and running errands.
  • Discuss fundamental elements in the cultural identity of Russians now and before and its role through history
  • Read and listen to texts on familiar topics, address comprehension questions related to these and reflect on your own and your peers’ views and thoughts.

Synopsis
This course is a BDE which aims to build on language skills and cultural knowledge acquired either through LR5002 or equivalent skills attained in Russia during your student exchange programmes. The structure of this course is similar to LR5001 and LR5002, and it is based on the concluding part of the textbook. A balance of receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) skills are developed through communicative classes and self-study. The course will give you further insight into the country's society and culture in a global context. Strategies to learning a foreign language and various transferrable skills are also part of the course. The language of instruction will be Russian.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify information provided in Russian texts, speech and audio files and answer comprehension questions related to these.
  • Write short essays using learnt grammar and vocabulary to organize main and supporting ideas effectively.
  • Apply Russian grammatical concepts (verb tenses, noun cases, prepositions etc.) to more complex Russian phrases.
  • Discuss ideas and express viewpoints.
  • Create and act out impromptu and pre-rehearsed role plays.
