Civil engineer who took the plunge and never took “No” for an answer

In recognition of his extraordinary milestones with Prime StructuresEngineering Pte Ltd, Nanyang Technological University is proud to presentMr Sonny Bensily with the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award.

In 1995, after a decade in the workforce, Mr Bensily took the plungeand started Prime Structures Engineering Pte Ltd. He was inspired byhis father, who himself had started a construction business. Though hisfather’s business had eventually failed, Mr Bensily learnt that failure isnot permanent. He said in an interview: “I saw that we grew up poor,but we still survived, so I was willing to take the risk.”

Today, Prime Structures Engineering has expertise in four keyareas: Building Envelopes, Customised Structures and Art Structures,Security Facades and Interior Fit-Outs. It has over 100 employees frommany countries including India, Ireland, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar,Philippines, Sri Lanka and England.

Prime Structures Engineering was involved in the construction of someof Singapore’s most iconic architecture such as Changi Airport Terminal 3and Marina Bay Sands (MBS). For MBS, Prime Structures Engineering wasinvolved in the construction of the Ned Khan Art Wall, the podium,the canopy; and for special mention the Skypark – the company successfullycladded the belly of the ship-like platform on top of the three hoteltowers which was 57 storeys above ground level.

The involvement and successful completion of construction in MBSallowed Prime Structures Engineering to build an international networkand reputation, providing it the springboard to venture overseas andparticipate in projects such as the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, theCancer Centre in Brunei and the casino resort and hotel complex ofOkada Manila in the Philippines.

As Prime Structures Engineering’s Managing Director, Mr Bensily hasreceived many accolades including the Singapore Indian Business LeadersAward (2016) and Singapore Successful Entrepreneur (2010). Hiscompany was placed 199 on the Financial Times’ FT List of 1000 High-Growth Companies Asia-Pacific 2018 and has also been a two-time winnerat the Enterprise 50 Awards, one of the top honours for privately ownedlocal companies in Singapore.

A proud alumnus of NTU, Mr Bensily has given generously via the Sonnyand Diana Bensily Bursary and Class of 1985 Pioneer Fund. He has alsospoken at the Distinguished Alumni Forum in 2012.
