Meet the Class of 2026 CoS Valedictorians! (Part 2): Tan Jun Kiat from SPMS

This is a four-part interview series celebrating the College of Science’s top graduates from the Class of 2026. In our second feature, Tan Jun Kiat from the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences reflects on a transformative university journey shaped by curiosity, perseverance and purpose. From pursuing excellence in the classroom to embracing opportunities beyond it, he shares the experiences, lessons and aspirations that define his success.

What motivated you to pursue a BSc in Mathematical and Computer Sciences, and how has that passion evolved over the course of your studies?

I initially chose Mathematical and Computer Sciences because I had a strong interest in math, and computer science was simply a popular degree that was somewhat related. However, over the course of my studies, I grew a real interest for CS. As I learnt how to turn ideas into practical solutions, and how the high level ideas in CS are deeply interconnected with mathematical reasoning, I started to appreciate the complementary majors and how they can be applied to real world problem solving.

 

Looking back on your university journey, what experience stands out as the most memorable or meaningful for you?

My most memorable experience was my semester exchange at Trinity College Dublin. Beyond academics, this exchange programme allowed me to grow as an individual. Living abroad challenged me to become more independent, as I nagivated the unfamiliar environment and stepped out of my comfort zone. It also gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures, meet people from around the world, and broaden my horizons.

 

What was the most defining academic or research challenge you faced, and how did it shape your approach to problem-solving?

When I did an Industry Sponsored - Final Year Project with STMicroelectronics. The nature of an FYP calls for independent work and mostly self-driven schedules, but working with an external company further pushes this requirement as there were more variables to consider, more people to engage, and more ownership required. This project gave me a first-hand experience on how to apply classroom concepts to a real-world problem, while navigating the realities of a corporate environment. My approach to problem solving became more nuanced as I gather these learning experiences.

 

Beyond academic excellence, what personal values, habits, or support systems do you think contributed most to your success as valedictorian?

My family and friends. I think university life can sometimes be very stressful, but I am very thankful that I can always count on my family and friends, and they have always supported me throughout my university journey.

 

As you move forward, how do you hope to use your scientific training to address real-world challenges or make a meaningful impact in your field or community?

I hope to apply logical reasoning and critical thinking skills that I have developed, in the field of cybersecurity, to safeguard people and assets.
