This second major incorporates relevant courses across College of Engineering (CoE) and College of Science (CoS) to provide students with the foundation and practical tools for understanding the concepts of food sustainability and applying them to real world scenarios.

The NTU centric second major focuses on sustainable food and nutrition. The compulsory courses are offered by NTU and include Food Chemistry & Nutrition, Future Foods – Introduction to Advanced Meat Alternatives, Food Standard – Food Safety & Risk Assessment, Food Process Technologies and Production System, Data Analytics in Food Systems. Students will have a list of NTU and WUR electives to choose from.

The Second Major in Future Foods (FF), led by NTU, will offer two specialized tracks. It is distinguished by several unique features:

  1. It is designed as a Second Major focuses on the broadening in learning and has been welcomed by the food industry.
  2. It is the only education curriculum with WUR partnership in Singapore;
  3.  It is the only food education curriculum with a perspective in food sustainability

Learning Outcomes

Students from different programmes will have a set of dedicated learning outcomes to be achieved with everyone who takes on this second major programme:

a. Sustainability, including environmental impact on food production

b. Future Foods, including novel foods such as plant-based proteins, fermentation-based foods, and cultivated meats.

c. Nutrition Security, including analysis of nutrition profile and consumer health benefits from diets incorporating future foods.

This is a full time four-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biological Sciences with 2nd major in Future Foods.

During the period of study for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with 2nd major in Future Foods, a student must pursue such courses of ​study as may be prescribed by Regulations made by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the School of Biological Sciences.

For successful completion of the programme and be eligible for graduation, students are required to fulfil the following requirements:

  1. For students admitted (from AY2025 and onwards), to obtain a total of not less than 132 academic units within the maximum period permitted, unless granted exemption by the School from taking certain courses, on a case-by-case basis.
  2. For students admitted in AY2024, to obtain a total of not less than 137 academic units within the maximum period permitted, unless granted exemption by the School from taking certain courses, on a case-by-case basis.
  3. Students are required to maintain a CGPA of at least 4.0 throughout their course of study. Should a student fail to maintain the required CGPA, the school would recommend him/her the option to drop the 2nd Major and join the standard BS (Hons) programme.
  4. To qualify for the 2nd major in Future Foods, students must complete a minimum of:
  • 30AUs of Future Foods courses for AY2024 intake and onwards
    1. To have gained a pass grade in all the Major and general education requirement courses as determined by the School of Biological Sciences; and
    2. Fulfilled other such requirements as may be prescribed by the Academic Board.
