This 4-year degree offers broad-based training in biological sciences and prepares graduates for challenging careers in Life Sciences research and industry. It provides a strong foundation in biological sciences that can include technology and business elements.

The study of biology is highly relevant to everyday life. At some point, we discovered that we are fascinated by living systems. As the knowledge base in the biological sciences grows exponentially and technology becomes ever more sophisticated, the ability to think broadly about biology and to apply your knowledge across boundaries of disciplines will inevitably become a very valuable and powerful asset both in the scientific environment and many walks of life.

  • An established and recognised direct honours Biological Sciences degree programme
  • Option for international exchange with over 150 partner universities
  • Compulsory Internship
  • Option to take up a final year project
  • Option to take a minor in any discipline

At least H1/SL or equivalent pass in Mathematics and a good H2/HL/A Level or equivalent pass in Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

  3. Fulfilled other such requirements as maybe prescribed by the Academic Board.

COURSES OF STUDY

The courses of study and the distribution of courses for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biological Sciences will be determined by the School of Biological Sciences with the approval from the University.

Each Course will be assigned a certain number of Academic Units (AUs) as determined by the University. The distribution of the courses of study and the associated number of AUs are shown in the tables below.

Starting from AY2021-22, all undergraduate degree programmes in SBS will incorporate the curriculum structure of the Interdisciplinary Collaborative Core (ICC) as part of the NTU Education 2025

  • Major Requirement (Core and Major Prescribed Electives) – provides the fundamentals as well as advanced topics and trainings specific to the major discipline and specialisation
  • 7 ICC- Common Core Courses focusing on Key Transferable Skills (4) and Grand Challenges (3)
  • 3 ICC- Foundational Core Courses including Effective Communication, Introduction to Data Science and a Mandatory Professional Internship
  • Broadening & Deepening Electives (BDE) – provides the opportunity to explore different courses in NTU; or take up more challenging and advanced topics within the chosen discipline

There are five compulsory components in the curriculum:

Core Courses (Core)

Core courses are offered throughout the programme of study. They are foundation courses designed to provide essential training in the fundamental Life Sciences and Social Sciences

Major Prescribed Elective Courses (Major-PE)

Major-PE courses provide students with opportunities to explore specialized areas of Biology and Psychology in more depth and intensity. The students may select their courses of study according to their own interests and career goals. Emphasis will be placed on group work and discussion of research papers.

General Education Requirement: Core Courses (GER-Core)

The GER-Core courses are specified by the School as being essential to train today's Science graduates, covering areas such as communication and environmental sustainability. General Education Requirement: Prescribed Elective Courses (GER-PE) Students undertaking the Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences programme are required to read and pass the GER Prescribed Electives from a range of areas. The number of AUs to be read in each area is specified by the School and in the table below. Students have the flexibility to choose the semester which they will read the individual courses.

General Education Requirement: Unrestricted Elective Courses (GER-UE)

Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences students are required to read and pass 15 academic units of GER Unrestricted Electives. Students may select to read any courses from the list of Unrestricted Electives offered by all Schools within the University. Students have the flexibility to choose during which semester they will read the individual courses.
