LKCMedicine EXCEL Research Seminars: Malaria and COVID-19: Two Very Different Challenges

Malaria remains the most significant parasitic disease, killing around 2,000 children daily. Control efforts include vector control and drugs, though resistance in both mosquitoes and the parasite is a growing challenge. The emergence of artemisinin resistance in Southeast Asia and East Africa is particularly concerning. Recently, two similar malaria vaccines were licensed, offering new hope. In contrast, COVID-19 had a global impact, with vaccine efficacy surpassing expectations, though antiviral drug development and deployment were inconsistent. On 23 August 2024, Professor Sir Nicholas John White FRS, a leading figure in tropical medicine at Mahidol University and Oxford University, will discuss these pressing issues at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Singapore, from 12 PM to 1 PM in the Toh Kian Chui Annex Lecture Theatre. Following the talk, there will be an Ask-Me-Anything session for early career researchers and PhD students at 1:45 PM. All are welcome, and CME points are pending approval from SMC.
